No question, reading and speaking English are crucial skills when it comes to prospering in the United States. That is, in part, why we publish a Spanish edition. And it’s also why immigrant populations do assimilate. By the second or third generation, English is the primary, if not only, language spoken.

If you draw a line across the US, splitting its population, with 150m
people to the north of the divide and the same number to the south, and
then draw a second, east-to-west, line, the cross formed falls close to
Owensville, a hamlet in southern Indiana.

Rafael Romero en Plan B

November 6th, 2006

With this post I’ll start a new category called “Latinohoosier“, that was my original intention in the first place. These posts will be about people that in one way or another (for better or for worse) have lived (or are still living) in Indiana and to which I will homage (like it or not) as Latinohoosiers.

Jesus is black in “Colour of the Cross”

If you go to China, Jesus is portrayed as a Chinese person; you go to parts of Africa, Jesus is portrayed as an African person; you go to Mexico, there are images of Jesus looking more Latino and Mexican. Black Americans are the only race of people on the planet that worship a Jesus outside of our own image.

The tough border security message is carried mostly by Democrats in the South and the Midwest, where a surge of Hispanic immigration is transforming small towns and cities. Born Baldemar Huerta in 1937 in San Benito, Texas, in the Rio Grande valley, his parents were migrant Mexican farm workers. He began working in the fields himself at the age of 10, and later described an early life in which he “worked beets in Michigan, pickles in Ohio, baled hay and picked tomatoes in Indiana . . . when that was over it was cotton- picking time in Arkansas”.

Invaders

October 10th, 2006

It’s pathetic that 5 years after 9-11, thousands of invaders per day can just walk into our country! Once the fence system was built, the present numbers of Border Patrol Agents could be effectively employed watching the very finite fence for breaches. Today, they are in the hapless position of playing “Keystone Kops,” running around 100,000 square miles of desert, looking for thousands of invaders who simply walked into the country and disappeared into the scrub lands.
