But it was the white community of 1950, many of whom had moved from the Midwest. “How did they change it to where 35 percent of white students get a B.A.?” asks Vallodolid. “His response was: through schools, churches, government … educational programs. Of the 42 million Hispanics in the U.S., 27 million are Mexican Americans according to the U.S. Census. For almost all of them, soccer is the sport they grew up on. And MLS teams across the country — from hotbeds like California and Texas on down — do their best to cater to Hispanic fans. MLS’s senior vice president of marketing, Dan Courtemanche, said league title sponsors such as Honda, Budweiser and Adidas do bilingual advertising and cross-promote their products and the game.

While Congress spars over the country’s immigration policies, newcomers in the Midwest are helping breathe new life into rural Main Streets that have been in decline. In southwestern Minnesota alone, immigrants are running more than two dozen stores in the old downtowns of Willmar, Marshall and Worthington. It’s a similar story in southern Minnesota and in parts of Iowa and other states.

Professor Eric Wright, director of health policy research at the Center, said that one important aspect of this research is to determine which groups are most affected. “Indiana has a number of troubling trends,” said Wright. “Obesity in the state’s black population has increased at more than double the national rate in recent years, and there has been a large increase among our Latino population.”
