margarita

Your annoyingly rich neighbors arrived home from Mexico the other day. Tanned and relaxed, they talked endlessly about their trip. They “discovered” the best restaurants and bakeries. They saw the most “charming” shops. They have a “new appreciation” for ranchero music. Have you heard of Chavella Vargas?

“You have to go,” they say. “You absolutely have to go.”

Hispanics, he said, “have shown a remarkable ability to cross borders” and “will do things other people won’t do.” Asians are “the best at espionage, keeping secrets.” Blacks “lack buoyancy” and are “more likely to drown,” while the white man’s burden will weigh down the last team with “guilt over the fact that they run things.”

(Foto: Elizabeth Coll)

Diversity 101

August 18th, 2006

To me, growing up, an immigrant was some kid who spoke Spanish orRussian - just not American, but there are subcultures here I nevereven heard of until I moved here. There are Bukharan Jews fromUzbekistan, Kurds, Haka-Chinese who’ve lived in India for ages,Chino-Cubans, Fukwanese, Indo-Guyanese, Istrians (making some of thebest italian food I’ve ever had) and Coptic Egyptians. Whereas earlierin NYC we would have seen the holy trinity of immigrants - RussianJews, Italians and Irish. They’re all still here, but in lesseramounts. The Jews in Queens are mainly Orthodox, the Italians havemostly moved to the suburbs, and the Irish are staying home where theeconomy is just smashing.

US Immigration 101

August 11th, 2006

During the Great Depression, Mexican residents and even US-born citizens of Mexican origin were massively deported to make room for unemployed non-Latino citizens. Yet temporary labor migration from Mexico, in the form of the Bracero Program (1942 to 1964), was promoted once again after the outbreak of World War II. Internal migrations of African-Americans, whites from the rural South, and Puerto Ricans to the industrial regions were stimulated on economic grounds as well.

Inside Immigration

August 11th, 2006

The 10 snakes, “at least seven or eight howling coyotes,” five scorpions and two U.S. Border Patrol agents that he passed while walking through the Sonora Desert didn’t scare Jose, 27. It was the thought of never seeing his unborn daughter or fiancee in Indiana that left him writhing on a 117-degree day.

Why Wal-Mart wants to sell ethanol

August 9th, 2006

While Indiana has a surplus of corn (as in the rest of the country), extracting ethanol from corn is not that easy. Some experts claim it would use more energy to produce the fuel for our cars, than it total consumption of fuel. Regardless, there is not enough corn to maintain our appetite for gas in this country. Now, if Wal-mart buys ethanol from Brazil, which extracts it more efficiently from zugar, then it can really become the fuel of the future.

Richard Glatzer’s and Wash Westmoreland’s low-budget slice-of-L.A.-life Quinceañera — winner of the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival — is the quintessential independent film story, both in terms of its against-all-odds approach and its confirmation of what exactly those odds are for a modest film produced in Los Angeles today.
