Smithsonian accepts neglet charges

July 30th, 2007

Last year, the Smithsonian Institution accepted charges of “willful neglect” for the glaring absence of Latino contributions to American history, culture, and art among its vast national collection. Now that oversight is about to be rectified as Dr. Refugio Rochin, director of Michigan State University’s Julian Samora Research Center, assumes the helm of the 150-year-old institution’s new Center for Latino Initiatives.

Senor Richardson

July 30th, 2007

There was a touchy moment for Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson in June 2007 when the Spanish-language TV network Univision announced that it would hold its Democratic candidate debate in September 2007. A testy Richardson threatened to withdraw from the debate unless he could give a presentation in Spanish rather than speak through an interpreter. He got his way. The same week Richardson with much fanfare announced the names of key Latino backers nationally.

House of Worship

July 22nd, 2007

Olga Rivera, a recent arrival from New York City, was taken aback when one of her bosses in Charlotte asked: “Do you have a house of worship yet?” It was before she even arrived here. Chief Justice Roberts Roots

July 16th, 2007

What do Janet and Michael Jackson have in common with U.S. SupremeCourt Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr.? They all grew up in Indiana and had fathers who were employed in the steel industry. There are some differences though. Joseph Jackson, Janet and Michael’s father, was born into a share cropper’s family in Fountain Hill, Ark. Joseph Jackson moved north and worked as a crane operator at U.S. Steel’s Gary, Ind., works before becoming full-time manager of the Jackson 5.

Palabra Pura and the Love of the Word

July 16th, 2007

For those who are unfamiliar, Palabra Pura features Chicano and Latino poets reading work in Spanish, English and a combination of the two languages. The series offers Chicago’s large Spanish-speaking population, the third largest in the United States, a venue to read their poetry as originally composed and helps audiences learn more about the strong tradition of poetry in Spanish.

Lowrider

July 1st, 2007

bomba

I was probably the only kid in Ohio who knew anything at all about lowriders and their Latino roots, and when the style finally spread to the Midwest (and all my classmates fell down laughing at them), I appreciated the history and the culture behind the style, if not the aesthetics.
