Fluency in English Increases

November 30th, 2007

The surveys show that fewer than one-in-four (23%) Latino immigrants reports being able to speak English very well. However, fully 88% of their U.S.-born adult children report that they speak English very well. Among later generations of Hispanic adults, the figure rises to 94%. Reading ability in English shows a similar trend.

Anti-Americanism in Latin America

November 29th, 2007

Is anti-Americanism rampant in Latin America, or is it simply hyped by the international media? – I recently had the chance to attend a unique symposium at downtown Indianapolis’ historic Columbia Club, titled “Combating Anti-Americanism and Populism with Education in Latin America.” Speakers from more than half a dozen countries in North, Central and South America collaborated to present views germane to their homeland and the troubling infiltration of populism into said societies.

Second to None: Recent Book Charts Pictorial History of Oblate Sisters, The Nation’s First Order of Black Nuns

November 19th, 2007

As the photo collection approaches the late 1800s and the early 20th century, many photos appear from Baltimore portrait studios such as Reissert’s, J. Holyland, and Strauss’. Many of these portraits are first communion photos of young African-American and African-Latino girls. Two tintypes from the J. Holyland studio in the 1860s and ’70s show young women, clearly of mixed race, posing in conservative, almost gothic-looking black gowns. One wears a medal around her neck from the St. Frances Academy, and both images have been colorized after printing with red rouge on the girls’ cheeks, accentuating and whitewashing their features.

Santerians | The Art of Joe Quesada

November 14th, 2007

The son of Latino rights activist and New York City Councilman Hector Rodriguez, young Nestor Rodriguez was an overachieving student in New York’s public school system who wanted to be just like his politically-active father. Dedicated to his neighborhood’s welfare, Nestor began working in soup kitchens and building housing for the homeless by age 13. When the crime rate skyrocketed within New York’s Latino community during the Cross Bronx Drug War, Nestor spearheaded the formation of the Street Angels, a controversial but effective watch group comprised of inner city youths whose popularity soared as the crime rate plummeted.

Pigeonholed by Politics

November 12th, 2007

What I haven’t heard enough about is how this neglect hurts Hispanic voters. In politics, the surest path to irrelevance and powerlessness is to be taken for granted by one party and written off by another. That is the road Hispanics are on now, thanks to some major blunders by the Republicans running for president.

Martinsville: Still at a Crossroads

November 12th, 2007

In 2001, shortly after Sept. 11, the second in command of Martinsville’s police force, assistant chief Dennis Nail, wrote a letter racially insensitive letter to the Reporter-Times. His words, in reality, were a clumsy and absurdly ignorant expression of hostility toward non-Christians and non-whites. That same public statement included another clumsy expression of hostility toward homosexuals – a group of people who, like any others, drive cars and could easily find themselves in Martinsville with flashing lights behind them. It was a warning: Get out of my country; stay out of my town.

Minority Perception

November 9th, 2007

Larry Hartwig knows what it’s like to have constituents ruffled – or downright angry – over their Spanish-speaking neighbors. In Addison, Ill, a middle-class town just outside Chicago where Mr. Hartwig is mayor, roughly one-third of the population is Latino. “There’s a perception that if you have a lot of minorities, it’s a bad community,” he says. “We have our share of tension.” But instead of taking the route of nearby communities that have enacted laws hostile to immigrants, Addison has, among other projects, set up a resource center in a Latino neighborhood that offers everything from ESL and computer literacy classes to a food pantry.
